A Recipe for Success

Wednesday December 11 2013

The Nazareth Trust, the UK Christian charity which runs The Nazareth Hospital EMMS in Israel, has cooked up a novel way of raising vital funds for the charity.

More Than A Menu is a collection of 136 recipes compiled by Scotland based volunteer, Levette Callander (pictured), who has sourced them from worldwide volunteers and supporters, past and present.

However, as its title suggests the cook book also includes stories and memories from people who have spent time volunteering and working at the Hospital, many of them as Medical Missionaries.

Levette said, “I asked hospital supporters from across the world to send me recipes, either from the Middle East or from their native land. What happened then was that, along with their recipes, they sent me memories of working in Nazareth and memories of growing up in their native land.

“It became clear there were two themes running through the material. One of family, whether your own family or the family of Nazareth supporters, or the worldwide Christian family, and the second, one of Service.  I then set about finding quotes from a variety of people and from the Bible, which were linked to Family and Service.”

Levette became involved with the charity when her husband, Douglas, took part in a sponsored bike ride in 1999 in Israel. Since then Douglas has completed seven bike rides in aid of the charity, and is also a Trustee.

The book, which is priced at £10, has proved popular as a Christmas gift. Levette says: “I received the first batch of books just over a week ago and they have already sold out and we have a substantial number of supporters now awaiting delivery of the next batch, so I’m just delighted.

“The sales of the book will help fund the continuing work of healing and reconciliation in the name of Jesus at the Nazareth Hospital EMMS and in the community around it.”

The Nazareth Hospital EMMS is the oldest continuing hospital in Israel. It was founded in 1861 as a four-bedroom clinic by Dr P K Vartan, who was sponsored by a group of Edinburgh doctors. Today the hospital has 147 beds and is the only 24-hour emergency department in Nazareth.
