Compassion announces new Scottish appointment

Tuesday April 15 2014

Compassion UK has announced its first Partnership Manager for Scotland.

Don Esson (pictured) will work to raise awareness of the work of Compassion to release children from poverty around the world and build partnerships with the Scottish church.

Compassion is an international child development charity with more than 60 years experience working with some of the world’s poorest children. At present more than 1.5 million children attend Compassion’s church-based projects in 26 of the world’s poorest countries.

Don is married to Margaret and has spent the last seven years as a youth pastor in a large Glasgow church as well as being the Scottish Director of Youth Alive. He said: "I am excited about this new role with Compassion because I see it as an opportunity to impact the individual and to build local church worldwide through the prevention of poverty."

Compassion UK CEO and fellow Glaswegian Ian Hamilton said: "Worldwide, 600 million children live in extreme poverty. Compassion has a mandate to advocate for these children, to release them from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty so that they may become responsible and fulfilled adults.

"We don’t do this alone; we do this through partnership. Partnership with sponsors, partnerships with local churches in the developing world and partnership with churches here in the UK. Appointing Don enables us to partner with even more churches and I’m excited at this opportunity to engage further with the Scottish Church as we seek to release more children from poverty."
