Presbytery of Europe Plans New Name

Thursday October 30 2014

The Church of Scotland's Presbytery of Europe has announced plans to rename itself The International Presbytery.

The new name - agreed at the presbytery's October meeting - will acknowledge the fact that it includes churches from Sri Lanka, Bermuda and Trinidad, as well as 14 congregations throughout Europe.

It also reflects the diversity of the congregations within the presbytery: Rotterdam, for example, has worshippers from over 40 countries; while Malta has over a dozen denominations represented every Sunday.

The Rev Robert Calvert, until recently minister of the Scots International Church in Rotterdam, said: "We see the world church as a living, vital organisation - a wonderful adventure of faith... a family of faith."

The presbytery's website address will remain the same for the time being, while final arrangements are confirmed for the change of name in Church of Scotland listings.

“This is a very good move. I am a member of a Church of Scotland congregation in Glasgow now live in India. Can I be a member of the International Presbytery? ”

“Good question! I suggest contacting the Presbytery through its website (last line of the story above).”
