Parish News Round-up

Thursday November 13 2014

Our weekly round-up of news received from local churches.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War 1 and the 75th anniversary of World War 2, St Colms and St Michael's Guild, Edinburgh, held an exhibition of mementoes and artefacts from both wars at their Remembrance services.

In the weeks leading up to Remembrance, members of the Guild and the congregation loaned photos, medals, postcards, letters from the front and many other articles for display. The exhibition also acted as a focus for remembrance at the meeting of the Guild on the evening of November 11.

The picture shows the Minister, the Rev James Aitken, with  Guild members at the exhibition.

A concert and talk on the crisis in Syria, held at St Saviour’s Church in Bridge of Allan, near Stirling, raised over £1500 for the Church of Scotland-supported charity A Place at the Table.

‘An Evening for Syria’ featured a talk by the Very Rev Dr Andrew McLellan, former Moderator of the General Assembly and Convener of the World Mission Council, who visited the region last year and saw the work of the churches helping refugees from the fighting in Syria.

That was followed by a performance by Syrian classical guitarist, Ayman Jarjour. A world-class guitarist who has performed all over the world, Ayman still has relatives in Damascus, where he was born.

The concert had been Ayman’s idea and was jointly organised by St Saviour’s Scottish Episcopal Church and Bridge of Allan Parish Church.

The minister of Ballantrae Parish Church, the Rev Stephen Ogston, made presentations to John McIlwraith and Robert Dalrymple, who recently retired as Session Clerk and Treasurer respectively. John had served for 33 years and Robert had been in the role for 29 years.

Both men received certificates, mantel clocks and vouchers and their wives were given flowers.

In October John Stevenson celebrated 60 years as an Elder serving Aberlady Parish Church.

During morning worship, John shared some of his memories of past events and Ministers with the congregation.

Thurso West Church Guild collected over 50 backpacks for the charity 'Mary's Meals', which provides educational materials for children in the developing world.

The Guild is pictured with the backpacks at a recent meeting, along with guest speaker Eric Farquhar, a local historian, and his friends Alice Stevenson and Brent Gonzalez.
