Parish News Round-up

 Thursday November 20

Our weekly round-up of news received from local churches.

A year ago the Minister and Session of the Lutheran Church in Behringersdorf, Bavaria, invited members from the linked congregations of Fort Augustus and Glengarry to visit them. 11 people accepted and enjoyed five days of hospitality and friendship. This year the Scottish churches reciprocated with a return invitation to the congregations in Behringersdorf and Schwaig.

Forty-one people, most of them members of the joint churches' Gospel Choir accepted and enjoyed five days of walking, boat trips, dancing, eating and, of course, inspired singing: spontaneously in village halls, boats and mountain tops and more formally but just as joyfully at a church service and a concert.

In case anyone is wondering “why Bavaria?”: the Minister there is the father of the Fort Augustus and Glengarry Minister, the Rev Tabea Baader.

On Monday November 10 the ladies of St Kentigern’s Parish Church Women’s Hour, Kilmarnock, celebrated the Sapphire Anniversary of their group. Invitations were sent out to past presidents and many were in attendance on the night, along with minister, the Rev Grant Barclay.

The ladies, who all wore blue for the occasion, had a wonderful evening of poetry and song, before having a nice tea and a  45th birthday cake. Cutting the cake were past President Marion Craig and the oldest member Cathie Brodie.

The Rev Monika Redman was inducted as the new Minister at St Leonard's Parish Church, Dunfermline on Thursday November 13. The service was led by  Rev Victor Laidlaw of Dunfermline Presbytery and was followed by a welcome reception hosted by the congregation of St Leonard's.

To celebrate St Margaret's Day, St Margaret's Church in Forfar had the Rev Dr Kathy Galloway, theologian, campaigner and writer as the guest speaker.

In her account of the life and work of Queen Margaret of Scotland, Kathy touched briefly on her involvement with the Iona Community and Christian Aid.

On Sunday October 28 elder/treasurer D Cowan Macnair (left) and elder Leslie J Sawers were presented with Long Service Certificates in recognition of over thirty years of service to Menstrie Parish Church, in the Presbytery of Stirling.

The congregation of Brucefield Parish Church, Whitburn made a presentation to Ian Wilson for his 50 years as organist and choirmaster.

The minister, the Rev Dr Sandy Roger presented him with a certificate and Session Clerk Jeff Wight  presented Ian with a gift from the congregation. Ian is pictured with Dr Roger and Session Clerk Jeff Wight

Brucefield has recently been "A" listed by Historic Scotland and is also listed in top 25 of Post War Churches by National Churches Trust.

It has had significant refurbishment to the roof and outside walls this year, to bring it back to its original 1966 status and the congregation thank all the funders for their generous donations towards this project.

The Sanctuary was rededicated by Rev John Povey during the induction of Dr Roger to the charge ofBrucefield at the end of August 2014.
