Church 'Speaks Out' on Violence Against Women

Tuesday November 25

A Church of Scotland campaign tackling the issue of violence against women begins today.

As part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the Church is encouraging members to 'Speak Out!' in protest at violence against women.

Starting on the 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, 16 women and men of all ages, and from all aspects of church life will 'Speak Out' to describe what they're doing to challenge violence against women, and suggest action the Church and its members could take.

Each message will be shared via social media (Facebook and Twitter), and added to a 'wall of images' on the Church of Scotland Facebook page.

On the final day – December 10, International Human Rights Day – the  Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt Rev John Chalmers, will summarise the campaign and highlight key messages and action points for the Church going forward.

Former Moderator, the Very Rev Lorna Hood, is supporting the campaign.

People can take part in the campaign by sharing 'Speak Out' messages on social media and sending their own stories of speaking out to churchandsociety@cofscotland.org.uk

A template for the 'speak out' wall is available here.

The Church of Scotland has a recent history of campaigning on violence against women and domestic violence in general, with reports to the General Assembly in 2003, 2011 and 2012. Men in the Church are encouraged to sign the White Ribbon Pledge and there is a suggested action plan for congregations.
