New Project for Young Adults Feeling Called to Work in the Church

Tuesday December 9 2014

A new gap-year project for young adults who may be experiencing a call to work in the Church of Scotland will launch next year.

Under the Volunteering Vocations scheme, volunteers aged 18-25 will spend 10 months living and worshipping together and working in church and community projects, while exploring their sense of call in a supervised environment.

It will start next year as a pilot project, with seven volunteers altogether in two locations – Glasgow, working in a variety of Priority Areas projects (in a partnership with the Presbyterian Church USA) and at St Andrew’s Church, Arbroath.

The work could include helping with each church’s various groups, being part of the pastoral care team and being part of missional work in the wider community.

Ultimately, the plan is to expand the project to around 10 locations and up to 60 people. While Volunteering Vocations is part of the Church’s Decade for Ministry, Heather French, the Church’s National Vocations Promotions Officer, said that it was for people exploring any kind of calling.

Heather said: “They’ll be supervised and they will have a chaplain who will help them explore the call, and they will worship together and eat together with folk who are thinking the same way.

“It’s something that looks good on the CV, is good for the community where they are, good for the church and good for them ultimately, whatever they decide.”

The deadline for applications is February 27 2015. To request an application form, or for more information, email vocation@cofscotland.org.uk
