The Church of Scotland has asked its ministers and office-bearers to be aware of changes to the notice period required for marriage in Scotland.
The new rules mean that registrars must be notified of intention to marry at least 28 clear days before the wedding. This is an increase from 14 days.
The change comes into effect from March 1, although the 14-day period will apply where both parties have lodged notices before then.
For further information or clarification contact your local registrar.
The change brings Scotland into line with changes in England and Wales, introduced as part of a new immigration scheme aimed at combating sham marriage. It is included in the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Act 2014. A commencement order, bringing the new notice rules into force on March 1, was made last week.
