Worship, 1620 style

Thursday January 29

An Edinburgh church is offering the opportunity to experience worship as it was in the early years after the Reformation.

‘Plane and dulce’ – Worship in the Early Reformed Kirk, in Greyfriars Kirk on February 8, will recreate the atmosphere of worship in 1620, the year the church opened.

Professor Jane Dawson, John Laing Professor of Reformation History at New College, University of Edinburgh and author of ‘Scotland Re-formed’ will give a talk on worship in the Church of Scotland in the years following 1560; and Dr Jamie Reid-Baxter and Martin Ritchie will lead the congregation in highlights of the ‘highly charged’ singing, prayer and preaching culture of the day.

Participants are asked to bring along a portable stool or chair to sit around the pulpit, although chairs will be available.

Worship in the Early Reformed Kirk starts at 3pm on Sunday February 8 in Greyfriars Kirk, Greyfriars, Edinburgh. Entry is free.

The event is part of Spark, a year-long festival of worship and the arts at Greyfriars which celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first pipe organ in Greyfriars Kirk – one of the first permanent organs in Scotland – and the 25th birthday of the current Peter Collins organ.
