Parish News Round-up

Thursday March 26

Our weekly round-up of news submitted by churches.

A 95-year-old from Shetland has published a volume of poetry in aid of her church.

Sing Caedmon Sing contains both previously published and new poetry by Stella Shepherd, along with illustrations by her late husband, Dennis.

Arriving in Shetland in 1962, Stella and Dennis were jointly teacher and lay missionary for the island of Papa Stour and later Fair Isle; and on retirement they helped supply pulpits around Shetland. Stella's previous writing includes 'Like a Mantle the Sea', an account of life on Papa Stour, published in 1975. Sir John Betjeman, then Poet Laureate, wrote her a letter of congratulations and came to visit the island.

Stella still lives by herself, with support from community and congregation, in Sandness.

The new book includes a foreword by the Rt Rev John Chalmers, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. All proceeds will go to Walls and Sandness Church of Scotland.

To purchase a copy, call Diane Chadwick on 01595 870205, or Betty Williamson on 01595 870252.
