STAINED GLASS WINDOW DEDICATED ON ARRAN

A stained glass memorial window in memory of Mrs Evelyn Sillars, MBE, MA, JP was formally dedicated at the end of the Easter Sunday service at St. Bride’s Church, Brodick, Isle of Arran, by the minister the Rev Angus Adamson.

A full-sized model of the window was unveiled in front of the pulpit – as the actual window is located in the church vestibule – by Lady Jean Fforde, daughter of the 6th Duke of Montrose, who is a member of the congregation. Lady Jean gave a brief outline of Evelyn’s life of service to the community during a period of over 50 years, which has provided a focus for aspects of the design of the window.

These included ordination as one of the first female elders, serving for some 30 years before her death in September 2013. She was also the presbytery elder for Ardrossan Presbytery for many years. Scotland’s first female County Convenor on Bute County Council, she was appointed a Justice of the Peace, serving on the local circuit for 35 years. For her tireless service to the community she was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace in 1980.

She had four daughters, three of whom live in Australia, but only Lyn (pictured with the window) who lives near Edinburgh was able to attend the service with her own family. The window, which greatly enhances the church, was designed, made, and installed by local artist Richard Leclerc at his Arran workshop.

SPENDING A PENNY FOR AFRICA

A Newton Mearns church has raised more than £600 for schools in Chad and Uganda, thanks to an innovative toilet twinning project.

Broom Parish Church in Newton Mearns, Glasgow, has encouraged members of all ages to donate their small change to a special talking toilet bowl. This has allowed the church to twin its toilets with school toilet blocks in Chad and Uganda as part of the toilet twinning which provides clean water, sanitation and hygiene education in some of the most deprived areas of the world.

The congregation plans to continue fundraising to support further twinning partnerships.

Minister at Broom, the Rev James Boag is pictured with members of the congregation donating to the 'toilet bowl'.

 LANARK HOLIDAY CLUB SUCCESS

More than 110 children in Lanark have attended this year’s week-long Easter holiday club, run by a team of volunteers from the town’s Greyfriars Church.

Primary school aged youngsters take part in songs, games, crafts and stories based around passages from the Bible and a moral theme set in ‘Hope Hospital’, the theme for this year’s club.

The church also opens its doors each afternoon to run a cinema showing family-friendly moves.

“Each year our holiday club has grown and we are grateful for the trust that parents in Lanark place in our volunteers. We write and produce the whole programme from start to finish for every holiday club,” said the minister, the Rev Bryan Kerr.

A team of 35 volunteers run the club, which is the brainchild of the church’s leadership team.

Bryan added: “Many people give generous donations to our work, including some of the parents who take kids along.

“We are also grateful to Border Biscuits Community Fund which generously supports our work.”
