Parish news round-up

Thursday May 7

Our weekly round-up of news received from local churches.

A group from Kinross Parish Church selling Fair Trade produce and gifts through Traidcraft had a turnover of more than £11,000 in the past year, smashing their previous record of over £8,000 and becoming the second-highest seller of Traidcraft in Scotland.

One of the organisers, Isobel Watt, said: “A huge thank you to everyone who has helped us make the wonderful amount of £11,444.49 this year. Whatever you buy, whether large or small, it all counts. We are indebted to all the Traidcraft team at Kinross Parish Church and to all the churches, cafes and other outlets throughout Kinross-shire for their continued support in stocking our tea, coffee and other goods.”

This year the team has also been able to send a donation of £300 from Kinross Parish Church to the Fair Necessities Appeal, which the UK Government will double. The money is to ‘help some of the poorest families in the world grow more, earn more and eat more’.

Two remote Church of Scotland parishes have embraced new technology in a ground-breaking mission project.

Shetland Westside Parishes have launched a smartphone app which includes news from both local and national churches, Bible resources, introductions to Christianity and a prayer request section. Included are several different searchable versions of the Bible, including some audio versions. There are a selection of Christian videos, many suitable for children, and worship songs.

The app, which is called Shetland Westside Parishes and is available for Android phones, has been developed by the churches’ minister, the Rev Brian Dobby.

It has been designed to largely update itself with little administration time, using RSS and Twitter feeds and YouTube playlists.

Shetland Westside covers the parishes of Walls and Sandness, and Sandsting and Aithsting, which between them cover part of the western Mainland of Shetland and the islands of Papa Stour and Foula.

Android users can find the app in Google Play.

The first female elder to be Moderator of the Church of Scotland's Lothian Presbytery was elected on April 30 when Presbytery met in Musselburgh.

Elizabeth Morton, an elder in St John's and Kings Park Church, Dalkeith, will be Moderator for 2015-16.

Ordained in March 1999,  Elizabeth and her husband Graham have 2 children - Gillian and Ian - and 4 grandchildren.

She sees the work of being Moderator as ‘ensuring that Presbytery members have the opportunity to discuss the wider work and business of the church and how we will continue to keep the church relevant to all’.

Six elders of Jamestown Parish Church were presented with 30 years’ long service certificates on Sunday April 26.

Left to right, the elders are: Mary Clubb, Rona Grant, Janette Lane, Margaret Nutter, Anne Park and Irene Sloss. They are pictured with parish minister the Rev Norma Moore, and the Rev Alastair Ramage, Moderator of the Presbytery of Dumbarton, who made the presentation.
