Minister Recruitment Drive Launched

Tuesday May 12

The Church of Scotland is to launch its recruitment drive for new ministers this Sunday at Heart and Soul in Edinburgh.

The campaign, which has been named 'Tomorrow's Calling', is the centrepiece of the Decade for Ministry, which aims to recruit and train at least 30 new candidates for the ministry annually for the next 10 years.

A new video (above) has been created in which a range of Church of Scotland ministers talk about the role. Among them is the Rev Michael Mair, at 26 the Church's youngest minister, who was called to St David's Broomhouse in Edinburgh last year.

He said yesterday: "I think we as ministers have to do a better job of reminding congregations that we all came from a pew. You need the calling of God, you need to be committed to it, but that journey began because somebody said 'have you ever thought about this?'"

The launch of the 'Tomorrow's Calling' campaign, including a showing of the video, will take place on the main stage of Heart and Soul in Princes Street Gardens on Sunday at around 4.45pm. Around 5000 people are expected to attend the event, a 'celebration of the life of the Church of Scotland', which takes place on the Sunday of General Assembly week.

Moderator-Designate to the Assembly, the Rev Dr Angus Morrison, will be on stage at the launch. He said: "I'm very excited about Tomorrow's Calling. It's a bold step which is vital for the future of our national Church."

The launch video will shortly be followed by additional accounts from ministers and trainees, and a social media campaign. Read more about the Tomorrow's Calling campaign here.
