The Presbytery of Lewis has expressed ‘shame and dismay’ about the recent decision to allow the ordination of ministers and deacons in same-sex civil partnerships.
In a ‘pastoral statement’ addressed to Church members and the whole population of the Isle of Lewis, the Presbytery states: “While… we recognise and remain under the authority of the General Assembly, on this matter, we strongly disagree with and distance ourselves from the decisions that have been made.
“We believe that these decisions represent a denial of and departure from the clear teaching of God’s Word: that such relationships are to be between one man and one woman, and that always within the context of marriage.”
While the Church still formally holds to that traditional view, the recent General Assembly passed a measure allowing churches to call ministers and deacons in a same-sex civil partnership. A decision on whether to extend that provision to people in same-sex marriages will be voted on by Presbyteries towards the end of the year.
The statement from the Lewis ministers and elders continues that they will oppose the same-sex marriage proposal, but that they ‘are determined to work and pray for the Church to be restored’. It calls on members and adherents to ‘stay involved in the work and opportunities we have for [God] in our congregations and parishes, trusting that His merciful response to our continued faithfulness in that way, will be to bless’.
The statement followed a special service last night at St Columba’s Old Parish Church Stornoway, attended by around 300 people.
