Boys' and Girls' Brigades Collaborate for Kenya Appeal

Tuesday November 24

Boys’ Brigade members from local groups across Scotland are working alongside the Girls’ Brigade Scotland for the first time, to launch its new 2015-16 Kit for Kenya Appeal.

With the help of the Church of Scotland, the BB World Mission Fund last year alone raised £10,000 with the Speak up, Speak Out appeal, set up to support anti-bullying initiatives in the Caribbean.

The BB World Mission Fund was founded in 1947 to provide support for ongoing and new work in areas of need across the world, raising more than £1.5million since it began.

The launch of this new initiative took place on Friday 20th November, 7pm at the Queensferry Parish Church in South Queensferry, and will help raise funds in order to provide kit for boys from BB units in Kenya from the poorest backgrounds.

A cheque for £10,000 from last year’s appeal was also presented to the Church of Scotland Moderator, the Rt Rev Dr Angus Morrison by BB young people, along with Bill Stevenson, Director for the BB in Scotland, and BB National Chaplain, the Very Rev Dr Andrew McLellan.

Bill Stevenson said: “Following the fantastic success of last year’s BB World Mission Fund where we raised a staggering £10,000, I am delighted to announce the launch of Kit for Kenya.

“It is vital we support the worldwide BB community that need our help as we have the resources and skills to help those in need. Providing uniforms to The Boys’ Brigade in Kenya will give the young people there a real boost and it is yet another example of BB young people here in Scotland going above and beyond to help others less fortunate than themselves.

“It’s also exciting to be working alongside Girls’ Brigade Scotland for the first time as we will be able to reach a wider audience and hopefully raise as much money for the Kenyan young people as possible.”

Caroline Goodfellow, Chief Executive Girls’ Brigade Scotland, added: “Girls' Brigade Scotland is excited to be working with The Boys' Brigade in support of Kit for Kenya.   This is the first time we've done this but we hope it will be the first step to a long term commitment to supporting the work of the World Mission Fund and providing practical support to our BB and GB colleagues around the world. This is an excellent example of Christian partnership working.”

The money raised from the appeal will buy material, sewing machines and employ people to make the uniforms for BB units across Kenya.
