The Church of Scotland has announced that the Rev Dr Martin Scott will be the new Secretary to the Council of Assembly.

Dr Scott will take over the role next summer, subject to the approval of the 2016 General Assembly.

He said he was ‘humbled and very honoured’ to have been chosen to replace Pauline Weibye, who announced her retirement in July.

Dr Scott has been Secretary to the Church’s Ministries Council since it was formed in 2005. A former professional musician, he was ordained in 1986 and led a Baptist Church in England for five years. He is a member of Drylaw Parish Church in Edinburgh, where his wife Jane is the minister. They have two grown-up children and a granddaughter.

He said: "The Church of Scotland has been a key part of Scotland for 500 years, spreading God's words, promoting education and alleviating poverty.

"I will support the Council as it takes steps to ensure the big issues facing the church, such as the future of ministry, are properly addressed.

"I will be responsible for ensuring the finances of the Church are stable and able to support the work that needs to be done.

"This means making sure that people who work at the national offices of the Church in Edinburgh fulfil the expectations of the Councils, local churches and Presbyteries."

Mrs Weibye was the first Secretary to the Council of Assembly, a role which was created when the General Assembly of 2009 agreed to split the role of Principal Clerk. It involves managing the church's central administration, overseeing a budget of over £100m and coordinating the activities of other councils so they work collaboratively.
