Election Guide for Churches

Wednesday February 10

The Scottish Churches Parliamentary Office has released a resource for churches ahead of this year’s Scottish Parliamentary Elections.

The resource is specifically aimed at church groups which are planning an election meeting or hustings before the May 5 poll.

It consists of a compilation of briefings on various issues from a church perspective, as well as a guide on holding hustings events.

The introduction notes: “As Christians we are called to play our part in building God’s kingdom. One way we can offer our support is to encourage open and respectful debate on the decision that voters will be facing in May. Churches are often seen as a neutral space, and so can provide an impartial opportunity for political debate. Christians are citizens too, and many will have views which have been shaped by their faith on current issues.”

The topics covered in the briefings include the economy, including attitudes to tax and the living wage; crime and punishment, education, food poverty, housing, health, refugees and the environment, among others. Each draws attention to the issues churches have particularly engaged with and suggests questions for election candidates.

The briefing is available from the Scottish Churches Parliamentary Office website.
