Rare Winnie the Pooh Book Discovered by Book Sale Volunteers

Wednesday March 29 2017

The annual Christian Aid sale at St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church in Edinburgh is hoping to build on the most successful year in its history when it returns in May.

There have been annual book sales at the George Street church every May since 1974, beginning as a couple of tables on the pavement and gradually expanding so it now completely takes over the church during Christian Aid Week, and also sells records, antiques and other collectables.

Last year the church was able to give to £141,000 to Christian Aid, £21,000 more than the year before. The amount raised from the sale of books increased by £2000 on 2015, and cash donations rose to over £50,000.

Volunteers have already been hard at work since January sorting and cataloguing the special books for this year's sale. Among the finds so far are a first edition of Winnie the Pooh, published in 1926; and they also received a large number of rare books from a Perth bibliophile.

This year’s patron is Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh.

Donations of books, paintings, antiques, printed ephemera, sheet music, stamps and postcards, records, CDs and DVDs and toys will be accepted at the church from Monday May 1 – Wednesday May 10, 9am-9pm (except on Sunday, and closing at 5pm on Saturday).

The sale runs from Saturday May 13 – Friday May 19 (except Sunday), opening at 10am each day and closing at 3.30pm except on Saturday (4pm) and Thursday (late opening until 7pm).

You can contact the church on 0131 2253847.
