Easter Appeal for Homelessness Work

Thursday April 6 2017

Scottish Churches Housing Action (SCHA) yesterday launched an Easter Appeal to keep its work going over the next financial year.

The charity, which brings together 12 Scottish denominations to help in the fight against homelessness, is hoping to raise £12,000.

Chief Executive Alastair Cameron said: "We've just come to the end of a difficult year financially - we've had to call on reserves to meet our running costs. As we approach a new financial year, we urgently need to bring in additional funds for our vital work."

SCHA, which last year celebrated its 20th anniversary, provides expertise that helps kickstart new volunteering initiatives to help homeless people at a local level. Alastair added that they see themselves as a vital ingredient in Scottish churches' work to tackle homelessness, based on the he Gospel quote that the Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast (Matthew 13:33).

"We are changemakers," he said. "With our support, some 30 starter pack projects now operate across Scotland, helping thousands of families and individuals each year to resettle after homeless, by making sure they have kitchen essentials, bedding and cleaning equipment. Our approach is to bring an idea to a new area, helping local people mobilise and deliver a new project.

“Then we move on, and that's important - not just because it lets us work in the next location, but because local control is the key to success. That's why we're like yeast - we're the invisible ingredient that stimulates activity."

The target of the appeal is to recruit 200 new supporters, each giving £5 a month. You can also give a one-off donation. For more information visit the appeal page
