A Boys’ Brigade chess team from Bearsden, near Glasgow, has taken home the top prize in the UK wide Brigade chess finals.

The team from the 1st Bearsden company comprising John McEwan, Alistair Ramsey and Fergus Hempel, fought off fierce competition from the 7th Edinburgh, 1st Ardshaw and 1st Cheslyn Hall to win the competition.

Companies used skills, commitment and concentration in order to make it through the regional heats and compete in the finals at Middle Parish Church Halls in Coatbridge on Saturday 25 March.

John McEwan, 17, said: "It was an incredibly competitive tournament. For a sport that is often considered 'boring', it was great to see the spectators fully engaged and I highly doubt they would have described the chess games in this way.”

Fulton MacGregor MSP for Coatbridge and Chryston visited the groups during the competition with the Rev Derek Gunn, minister at Airdrie: Clarkston, conducting the opening devotions.

Bill Stevenson, CEO of the BB and Alistair Burrow, Vice President and BB officer with 1st Bearsden were also among visitors sthe finals.

Graham Sharp, BB adult leader and captain of 1st Bearsden, added: “To be crowned UK champions is a phenomenal achievement. I've been heartened by the support and encouragement the other Boys in the Company have shown to the team on their way to securing the 1st Bearsden's first ever success in a national competition.”

A new twinning arrangement between congregations in West Lothian and South Lanarkshire has been cemented by a series of joint events during the partnership’s first year.

Kirk of Calder in Mid Calder and Chalmers Parish Church in Larkhall signed a twinning covenant in October and signed by the respective ministers and session clerks. The covenant commits both churches to ‘Enter into equal relationships in terms of Faith, Fellowship and Friendship.’

Teams from both churches (pictured) were invited to meet and make plans.

The two congregations swapped ministers on Sunday February 26 and a ‘Twinning’s Got Talent’ social event is planned for early summer at Chalmers Parish Church.

Chalmers minister, the Rev Andrea Boyes and Kirk of Calder minister, the Rev John Povey have welcomed the news parternship, commenting: “Twinning our churches brings a commitment to share our gifts, encourage one another and serve in the love of Jesus. It is an adventure of faith together.”
