Easter Sunday was a special day for the Border Kirk congregation at Longtown, near Carlisle. This was the first time they had celebrated Easter in the Methodist Church, where they now worship since the closure of their church building in December.

It was all the more special in that Helen Carlyle of Kirkpatrick Fleming was ordained an elder. Her mother, Margaret Carlyle, only recently received her long service certificate and proudly attended Helen’s ordination. Members of the Methodist congregation as well as members of the Border Kirk's Carlisle congregation also joined in this happy event.

Forty members of Banchory West Church gathered to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Rob Watt’s ordination as an Elder.

Minister, the Rev Tony Stephen, offered a prayer of thanks for Rob’s long years of loyal service, which included over 20 years as a Session Clerk, and presented him with a framed certificate signed by the Moderator of the General Assembly.

Rob joined the church in Strachan, Aberdeenshire, in his late teens and became an elder in 1967. A few months later he was invited by the Rev Frank Dey to become Session Clerk, a role he filled until 1987. When the church closed in 2002, Rob and his late wife, Bette, transferred their lines to Banchory West.

He is pictured with two of his daughters, Shirley (left) and Hazel.

On Sunday April 23 at Crosshouse Parish Church in the Presbytery of Irvine and Kilmarnock, Long Service Certificates were presented to Ailsa Bain, Tom McWhirter and Robert Pollock for 30 years service of eldership; and for the late John McHarg for 40 years of eldership. The certificates were presented by the Rev Eddie Marshall and children of the Young Church, and Mr McHarg's certificate was presented to his wife Sadie.

A Paisley church is hosting a series of Sunday afternoon concerts, starting next month.

Martyrs’ Sandyford Church’s ‘50:50 Proms’ concerts commence on May 14 and will continue through June, alternating between the church’s two buildings.

  • May 14, King Street: New Paisley Brass Group.
  • June 4, Montgomery Road: String quartet from St Mary’s Music School, Edinburgh.
  • June 11, King Street: Organ music, piano duets, singing and trumpet solos from the church organists, Rachel Ong and Stewart Munro.
  • June 18, Montgomery Road: the Arcara Consort, a reunion of former members of the Stepps Recorder Consort.

All four concerts start at 2.30pm and tickets are £5 on the door.

On Easter Day, four elders at Crossmichael, Parton & Balmaghie Church, in the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright, celebrated a combined service of 187 years. Minister, the Rev Sally Russell is pictured with Church Officer Jimmy Adams (47 years service), Willie Bell (38 years, of which 27 at Crossmichael), Jim Callander (55 years) and Session Clerk Willie Little (47 years). Willie Little has also been church organist for 65 years.
