Tearfund is holding ‘a feast with a difference’ in Edinburgh to mark the launch of a new campaign on food waste.
The ‘Renew our Food’ campaign includes an invitation to individuals to pledge to reduce the amount of food they waste, and to ask supermarkets to take stronger action on their food waste.
A third of all the food produced in the world is never eaten – enough for all the people who struggle to feed themselves. In the UK, edible food worth £470 per household is thrown away every year; and a third of edible vegetable crops are discarded because they don’t meet supermarkets’ cosmetic standards. Moreover, the production of all this waste food contributes to climate change.
The ‘Food Waste Feast’ in St Paul's and St George's Church next Friday (June 16) will celebrate the food we have been blessed with, and start conversations about reducing waste and reusing the leftovers.
Tearfund Scotland’s advocacy and campaigns manager, Charlie Bevan, will speak at the event, and there will be local and global stories.
The event is free but ticketed. You can book at eventbrite.
