The Guild of Currie Kirk in Edinburgh last week handed over more than 2000 knitted hats to help Syrian refugees this winter.
The hats, donated by knitters from across Edinburgh, will go Arsal, in the Lebanon, There, over 5000 feet above sea level, over 70,000 refugees, including 6000 children in Arsal, are preparing for a fifth winter in tents in sub-zero temperatures.
Currie Guild first got involved last year when they were approached to help with an appeal by the charity Edinburgh Direct Aid, which over the past few years has shipped containers of clothes to the refugees in Arsal.
As well as clothing, the Guild decided they would knit hats, and set themselves a target of 100. By the end of November 2016, they were able to hand over 611. This year, the donations kept coming, and Ann Thanisch of Edinburgh Direct Aid attended the meeting of the Guild on November 7 and collected 2,203 hats.
