Glasgow Celebrates Patron Saint

A series of events celebrating the life of Glasgow’s patron saint, St Mungo, this week will climax with an ecumenical service in Glasgow Cathedral on Sunday January 14 at 4.30pm.

The service, run by Glasgow Churches Together and the Cathedral with the encouragement of the City Council, has run for the past nine years and become an established event in the life of the city.

This year’s event will be enriched by choral and instrumental music and drama by the Archdiocesan Arts Project, AGAP, portraying the meeting between St Columba and St Mungo. A Piper will lead a Colourful Procession of Civic and Church Leaders, joined by representatives of the Universities of Glasgow, Procurators, Trades and Merchant Houses and Others. The service is a celebration of the city of Glasgow and includes prayers for its well-being and development.

Glasgow Churches Together and the Cathedral are also involved in several other events during the St Mungo Festival.

On Friday January 12, Mungo’s Bairns, a festival of song and drama exploring the life of Mungo performed by Students of Glasgow University and local primary school children, will be held in Wellington Church, Southpark Avenue, at 10am.

On Saturday January 13 there is an opportunity to view a copy of the Vita Kentigerni, the 12th century book commissioned by Bishop Jocelyn of Glasgow to be written by Jocelin of Furness, with music and poetry. The free event takes place in the Mitchell Library from 11.30am.
