“We weren’t too sure what to call the Club,” said the Rev John Balchin, assistant minister at St David’s. “We decided on ‘Pi Club’ – ‘Pi’ being short for Pioneer. We felt it would be good to give the children somewhere to go in their holidays. The primary pupils had “Adventure in Boats” as their theme, including Noah’s Ark and Jonah and the Whale, the juniors Biblical mountains, and the seniors group discussion using tape recordings.
Badge and Card
The children paid 3d. to join and received a badge and membership card.
Although the emphasis was on Christian education, the syllabus included handcrafts, story-telling, games, chorus singing and kerb drill given by police on Friday.
A total of 320 children appeared at least twice in the five days of the Club.
There was a display on Friday evening for parents and friends to see and hear what had been achieved throughout the week.
