Youth: 'Sharing the Fragrance of His Love'

Monday December 11 2023

A young member of the Kirkliston Parish Church family reflects on how his faith has helped after moving from Nigeria to Scotland.

This is my journey with Christ, and I’d like to share it with you.

My name is Olorunjuwon Israel Adedayo and I was born in Lagos, Nigeria and lived there until I was 15. I was  outgoing and well known in the neighbourhood of Adegoke. I guess I just liked being around people!

I was privileged to be birthed into a Christian home with good values and principles. We used to go to Church every Sunday. I would be in the children’s department and memorise verses from the Bible. Reflecting on these  experiences fills me with a great deal of hope.

As a child I often felt forced to attend worship and to be honest it was a bit overbearing. But now, I see the value of Christian fellowship and see ‘church’ as an essential part of my faith journey. As the body of Christ we grow together. We need each other.

Due to changing circumstances we relocated to Scotland in 2022. This was really difficult for me and me and my mum because we’ve lived in Nigeria for most of our lives. Everything was different and I left so many things behind; friends, loved ones, karate, my culture and basically everything that was familiar to me. The transition continues to be a major challenge for me but my faith has helped a lot.

At school I’ve made some friends, and the church community has given me a sense of hope; making me feel like I’m not alone. Joining other young people at the youth fellowship on a Friday evening coupled with Boys’ Brigade, gives me a sense of adventure. It’s also benefited my mental health playing in the Church band and leading worship on Sundays. This has given me purpose and meaning and it’s a way of showing my gratitude for my God-given talents.

My main instrument is the acoustic guitar, but I also enjoy the keyboard and drums. Some of my other hobbies  include football, computer programming, listening to music, and believe it or not… ironing! I would call to this as my hidden talent!

A Bible verse that instils hope in me is Psalm 68: 19: ‘Praise the Lord! Everyday He helps us with the loads we must carry. He is the God who saves us.’  This verse gives me a sense of God’s closeness; that he accompanies me during the highs and lows, but that He also celebrates with me when things are going well. Knowing that Christ is for me gives me peace and it strengthens me amidst the storms of life. It also reminds me that my future is bright because He loves me unconditionally.

I dream about one day combining a multitude of my interests that range from my love of music, football, IT and cologne-making. I believe that as a Christian we’re supposed to share the fragrance of His love to the world. I’m so grateful for the opportunities God gives me to do that daily. To Him be all the glory and honour forever!
