Looking Back: Christian Aid Weeks – an Explanation

From May 1964

What are the Churches doing to help the millions of people in need the world over?

Much help can be given because of the support provided by Churches of many denominations all over the world. It is channelled through Inter-Church Aid, the world-wide network which has developed in a truly amazing way in the past 15 years.

The Church Of Scotland contributes to this service of Christian Aid through the Co-ordinated Appeal. It has a Standing Committee on Inter-Church Aid and Refugee Service which is responsible for giving information about this work and is authorised to accept donations from all wo feel moved to devote additional funds to this great Christian Service.

It is recognised that Inter-Church Aid has an important part to play in the Church’s work overseas, so the Committee is to be included in the new Overseas Council coming into being at this year’s General Assembly.

A booklet explaining more fully how Inter-Church Aid works, entitled “This is Inter-Church Aid”, is available from Miss M.V. Turnbull, Secretary, Church Of Scotland Committee on Inter-Church Aid and Refugee Service, 121 George Street, Edinburgh EH2.

Christian Aid Week

Christian Service knows nothing of denominational divisions. All the work of Inter-Church Aid is ecumenical, but for some years now a specially close partnership between the Churches in Britain has taken place every May during Christian Aid Week. At this time congregations of many denominations join together to tell the public what the Churches are doing for those in need and to ask for their support.

Christian Aid Week is sponsored by the British Council of Churches Inter-Church Aid Department and has the full support of the Church Of Scotland.

This year it takes place from 25th to 30th May. The Organising Secretary for Christian Aid Week in Scotland is Mr James Hodge, Inter-Church Aid and Refugee Service, 33 Melville Street, Edinburgh. 3.

The Scottish Committee of War on Want, 214 Clyde Street, Glasgow, C1, enlists help for various practical projects, including projects associated with our mission work in Africa and India.

Oxfam is a general agency for famine relief established in Oxford and frequently advertised in our magazines.
