Looking Back: Commemoration of Dr Candlish

From December 1973

Commemoration of Dr Candlish

A ceremony in Edinburgh’s Calton Cemetery and a commemorative service in St George’s West Church marked the centenary of the death of Dr Robert Candlish, one of the greatest figures in the Disruption of 1843 and the creation of the Free Church.

The present minister of St George’s West, the Rev Dr W.D. Cattanach, spoke at the commemorative service followed an address on Dr Candlish’s achievements with a short sermon on the text used by him when he first preached in the Old St George’s; “One soweth and another reapeth”. At the Disruption Dr Candlish and many of his congregation founded Free St George’s, now St George’s West.

Among those taking part in the ceremonies were great-grandchildren of Dr Candlish and representatives of Candlish Church, Edinburgh, the present St Andrew’s and St George’s, and New College.
