Looking Back: From ‘Pub’ to Kirk House

From April 1963

From ‘Pub’ to Kirk House

The historic Kirk of the Greyfriars in Edinburgh recently acquired a public-house in Candlemaker Row adjoining the graveyard and had it converted to a Kirk House.

The architect was Mr George Hay, A.R.I.B.A., one of their elders, well-known for his published work on post-Reformation Churches and for his restoration and refurnishing of many Scottish churches in recent years.

The main entrance to the Kirk House is from the Kirkyard through a spacious porch, leading to the main Assembly Room. The ground floor accommodation includes lounge, kitchen, classroom and committee-room.

New lighting has been installed on the pathway leading from Kirk to Kirk House through the graveyard.

The House has light and colour, and is as far removed from the ‘drab church hall’ as can be conceived.

Light snacks are served after morning service on Sundays.
