The ways and means committee of St Mary’s Parish Church, Haddington, are holding a ‘medieval fayre’ in the town on June 15th. They wanted a form of fund-raising with a difference but credit their minister, the Rev James Riach with the idea.
Research has gone into making costumes, stalls and side-shows as authentic as possible. Among the attractions – which Haddington hopes will draw visitors from churches outside East Lothian – are conducted tours of the historic church and such events as tossing the sheaf. The stocks will be in use for the day and there will be what’s described as ‘jousting’ (variation of).
St Mary’s hope that Guild parties and others may want to make the fair an occasion for a day out.
