Helen Keller
The first number of The Church Of Scotland Braille Magazine, which was described in our June issue, has drawn a generous testimony to its value from Dr Helen Keller, the gifted authoress, who, as is well known, lost her sight and hearing from scarlet fever when not two years of age, and so overcame her disabilities that she went to college and took her B.A. degree. She says:
I greet with pleasure the first number of The Church of Scotland Braille Magazine. Since the blind were objects of the Saviour’s special care, I have been surprised that a country so rich in treasures of faith as Scotland, did not sooner kindle a spiritual beacon for its sightless. It is essential to the happiness of those whose physical eyes see not that they should be often encouraged and strengthened to walk by the Inner Light.
Now that The Church Of Scotland Braille Magazine is sending its first rays into dark lives, I hope it will continue to shine bright and steady. Its pages are full of earnest thought. I read with special interest the message of world peace and the paragraphs urging more active co-operation between all nations to promote the well-being of the handicapped everywhere. That it may go still further and be a force to inspire others to live now and hear the teaching of Jesus is my sincere wish.
