It is reported that during the ski season 20,000 people are in the glens of Angus and Perthshire on a Sunday.
One minister in their ‘home towns’ says that this is making a big difference to his Sunday School, Youth Fellowship and Bible Classes. The young people who would be leaders there are, many of them, away on the hills – either on skis or mountaineering.
This is a new pattern of winter Sundays. “We don’t want to be tied to teach or lead.”
In the glens, ministers report that the Sunday visitors are well-behaved; and except when there is over-drinking, they do not disturb the kind of Sunday to which the local people have been accustomed. They do not go to church – they have come to ski.
On the whole, say the reports, the people who benefit financially welcome what is happening; the others tend to dislike the ‘invasion’ of the Sunday quiet.
The Rev WG Shannon, recently appointed Home Board Evangelist, has made a special survey of ski areas.
