Jamie Stuart

Jamie Stuart is an actor and author whose retelling of the Bible in Glaswegian, A Glasgow Gospel, was a Scottish bestseller. He has also written A Scots Gospel, A Glasgow Bible, Proverbs in the Patter and other works. He is an Elder at High Carntyne Parish Church, Glasgow.

What is your earliest memory of church?
Sitting in the high gallery of Stepps Church and (not being a member of the Sunday School, at seven years of age) watching the children receiving their prizes.

What is your favourite hymn or praise song?
Very difficult! Perhaps At the Name of Jesus Every Knee Shall Bow.

Do you have a Bible you particularly treasure?
But of course! My own publication of the Bible stories rendered in the language of the people - A Glasgow Bible.

What is your favourite Bible passage?
John 14: "Let not your heart be troubled: believe in God, believe also in me."

What is your favourite religious book (other than the Bible)?
Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela.

Which place do you find most inspirational?
Sitting in my back garden, admiring the trees and flowers, and listening to the birds.

What was your most memorable worship?
In High Carntyne Church, at 26 years of age. I had just been demobbed from the RAF. My minister, the Rev James Martin, declared: "If Jesus is not in your life, why not leave the door open and invite him in?"
I took his advice.

Who has had the biggest influence on your faith?
The late Dereck Bingham.

Which religious figure (living or dead) would you most like to meet?
Paul the Apostle.

What one question would you ask God?
Gracious God, will you please direct me to my wife?
