Christian Aid is appealing for churches and other organisations to support a new project enhancing the lives of people with disabilities in Ghana.
And groups who can raise £5000 for the Growing Economic Opportunities for Sustainable Development project (GEOP) will have their donation at least tripled by the European Union.
The three-year, EU-funded project, launched last year, offers training in a wide variety of areas – from bead making to soap production. It aims to foster partnerships between civil society and local authorities, promoting local job creation.
Although Ghana’s economy has expanded in recent years, poverty is still prevalent with more than 49% of Ghanaians living on less than US $2 a day. GEOP provides appropriate support, skills opportunities and financial capabilities to enable people to start and grow their own businesses or gain employment.
One of the people who has benefited from the project is Amina Issah Ebanyinle (pictured). The 42-year-old is divorced, has three children and lives with a disability. As part of the GEOP Project for Persons With Disabilities, she was taught how to produce necklaces, bracelets, earrings and slippers.
Amina said: “Participating in the training was the best decision in my life as I can now use my hand to work and provide the basic needs of my family.”
Christian Aid is looking for churches, schools, businesses and community groups to link with this project. If you can raise £5,000 over the next two years, the European Union will match fund your donation by at least three times - turning £5,000 into £20,000.
