John Byrne with the self-portrait donated to this year's Christian Aid sale
This year’s Christian Aid sale at St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church has been hailed by its convener as ‘one of the best’.
The sale, held as ever in Christian Aid Week in May, raised over £140,000 – including nearly £100,000 from book sales alone.
And a self-portrait donated by the sale’s patron, artist John Byrne, raised over £5000 in a sealed-bid auction – the most valuable donation the sale has received in its 45-year history.
After expenditure, the organisers were able to make a donation of £110,000 to Christian Aid.
Mary Davidson, convener of the Christian Aid group at the church, states in the sale’s annual report that: “There is no doubt that the 2018 Sale will stand out in our annals of 45 years as one of the best.
“Firstly perhaps this was because it was held in the warmest May in Scotland for a century.”
She adds that having John Byrne as patron was ‘one of the most memorable, momentous, marvellous things of all’.
Next month, the Christian Aid team at St Andrew’s and St George’s West holds its now-annual autumn Art and Scottish Book Sale, the centrepiece of which this year is a watercolour by John Bellany. This takes place from October 25-27.
