Walk of Unity Against Homelessness

Thursday May 16 2019

Representatives of multiple Scottish denominations are expected to take part in a walk in Edinburgh in support of the ecumenical homelessness charity Scottish Churches Housing Action (SCHA).

The trek from the city centre to Portobello has been dubbed a ‘Walk of Unity’, representing the churches’ joint determination to tackle homelessness in Scotland. It will also raise awareness of the issue, as well as money to help SCHA’s work.

The walk, on Friday June 7, will set off from St John’s Episcopal Church on Princes Street, call at Duke Street United Reformed Church in Leith and finish at St John the Evangelist RC Church in Portobello. Participants can walk either the Princes Street to Portobello (2.5 miles) or Portobello to Leith (3 miles) legs, or the whole distance. Refreshments will be available at Leith and Portobello.

SCHA, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2020, is a joint initiative of 12 Scottish Churches. The organisation stimulates and supports anti-homelessness initiatives across Scotland, including Starter Packs schemes and mentoring and befriending services; and advises churches converting redundant buildings into affordable housing..
