Knitting Call for Poverty Awareness

Tuesday July 23 2019

Knitting and crochet enthusiasts are being called to put their skills to use to help raise awareness of food poverty in the UK.

End Hunger UK is asking supporters to make knitted and crocheted foodstuffs to present to MPs during the Week of Action to End Hunger in the UK, which is October 11-18.

End Hunger supporters around the country will be meeting their MPs that week, asking them to call for a Government commitment to halving food poverty in the UK over the next five years. The idea is to leave every MP a knitted piece of food. There is a selection of patterns online and the knitted items should be sent to Church Action on Poverty (CAP) by September 27.

End Hunger UK is a coalition of organisations including the Church of Scotland, Church of England and other denominations, the Trussell Trust and Church Action on Poverty.

During the Week of Action, supporters are being encouraged to put on events to raise awareness of food poverty locally. There is also a Day of Action in London on Wednesday October 16, at which campaigners will attempt to meet up with their MPs, as well as taking part in workshops, hearing stories from people with lived experience of food poverty and seeing performances by the End Hunger UK Foodbank Choir.
