Our regular round-up of news received from churches

Members of the congregation of Westburn Parish Church in Greenock recently raised £827 for Adams House, a CrossReach specialist care home in Elderslie, thanks to a sponsored walk.

The cheque was presented to home manager Martin Lightbody in June. Residents from the home were also entertained at an afternoon tea at the Church to further cement the relationship.

The fundraising is part of a drive by the Church to raise dementia awareness. A team of dementia champions has been appointed and the Kirk Session, along with a donation from a local supermarket, approved funding for new signage designed to help those living with dementia.

Describing the work undertaken by the team, student minister at Westburn William Boyle said: “They will ensure we remain a welcoming and inclusive church. They will ensure regular training occurs, watch out for improvements we could make, if for example we decide to refurbish the building, they would decide on best colour scheme, furniture etc. On a Sunday morning they also keep an eye out for people who have dementia.”

More than 20 members of the Church of Scotland Guilds of Carntyne in Glasgow and Glenkens Churches in Dumfries and Galloway celebrated more than 20 years of friendship with a special lunch in Troon.

Joan Walker explained: “The Guilds joined in linkage in the early 1990s, when we were Balmaclellan & Kells and High Carntyne  Guilds.  Since then Balmaclellan & Kells have joined with Dalry to form Glenkens Churches Guild and High Carntyne Parish Church Guild after a union with South Carntyne became Carntyne Parish Church Guild.

“It is interesting to note that shortly after our Guilds joined together the Churches of Balmaclellan, Kells and Dalry also united to form one congregation.

“The Guilds have kept closely in touch over the years – probably more than most Guilds.”

The group, which celebrates together every year, met at the Piersland Hotel in Troon on July 24 after a short walk.  They have met every year but one during the 24-year linkage and plan to invite two other linked Guilds to join them in future.
