Tearfund Scotland has launched a new campaign focusing on delivering life-saving water in areas where climate change has brought drought.
The ‘Your Neighbour is Thirsty’ campaign highlights the case of Orbisa, who lives with her husband and nine children in north-east Ethopia, one of the hottest inhabited places in the world.
The area used to get rain for four months of the year, but now it only falls in August, meaning that families don’t have enough water to survive. The river Orbisa and her family used to rely on has dried up, and now she is forced to walk up to ten hours, at risk from leopards and hyenas, to collect water. Even then, she struggles to bring back enough, and the family often goes to bed hungry.
Tearfund is working with a local partner to install solar-powered wells, providing clean water closer to communities.
