Rescheduled Oberammergau Tickets Released

Thursday October 1 2020

Advance tickets for the 42nd Oberammergau Passion Play, which has been postponed until 2022, go on sale this Monday (October 5).

The world-famous play, held in the small Bavarian town of Oberammergau since the 17th century, is usually staged every year ending in zero. However, this year’s production has been put back two years because of the coronavirus pandemic, and will now take place from May 14 – October 2 2022.

Around half of the tickets for 2020 have been rebooked for 2022, and the remainder will be sold from Monday. These include both theatre-only tickets and packages including accommodation and meals.

The play’s director, Christian Stuckl, admitted that it would be a challenge to produce the play in the uncertain climate of the moment, but promised: "We will play, fulfil the vow and continue the tradition of the Passion Play."

The play’s origins go back to 1633, when the local population vowed to put on a passion play in thanks for being delivered from the plague which was rampant at the time. It now attracts audiences from all over the world, and is staged in a 4500-seat auditorium with an uncovered stage.

Tickets will be on sale from the Oberammergau Passion Play website
