CrossReach Service Scoops Award

Tuesday November 19

A home for disabled young adults, run by the Church of Scotland's social care arm, has won the Specialist Adult Care Award category of the Scottish Care National Care Home Awards.

The Bungalow in Stonehaven is a long-term residential service catering for five people with profound learning and physical disabilities.

The home was nominated for the award in recognition of the selfless and excellent service provision offered during a challenging time due to major building works during 2012 and 2013. The Bungalow is one of 70 services run by CrossReach (Church of Scotland Social Care Council).

The Bungalow’s Service Manager Kathleen Keith said: “We are overjoyed that we have won the award. The extension to the building allowed us to increase the number of residents we care for. We now also have a fantastic new sensory garden which is perfect for our service users.”

“Staff worked around the building works to plan suitable activities appropriate to each resident’s needs and therefore reduce the impact of noisy work and stress levels for the residents. The main priority for the team was to ensure the seamless continued care and support for those they look after.

“This made it possible for each person to continue to experience the same level of attention, care and service provision they are used to receiving. The extensive renovations to the building were made possible by a legacy left by Dr. Dixon to CrossReach to continue the work of The Bungalow.”

CrossReach’s Director of Adult Care Services, Calum Murray, is full of praise for the home: “We are delighted to be the only voluntary sector organisation to win one of the awards. Staff at The Bungalow worked extremely hard to provide continuity of care for service users through a testing period.

“This award is a deserved recognition of their commitment to caring for the residents. CrossReach is very proud of the work they do and the dedicated way in which they carry it out.

“We would also want to acknowledge the invaluable support given to The Bungalow by the local churches, the home’s chaplain, volunteers and both Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils which demonstrates the community working together.”
