Video Marks Holocaust Memorial Day

Tuesday January 18 2022

Holocaust Memorial Day will officially be marked in Scotland with the release of a video featuring contributions from genocide survivors.

Holocaust Memorial Day is marked internationally every January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1945. It remembers the millions of people killed or left affected by the Holocaust, as well as genocides in Cambodia (1975-9), Rwanda (1994), Bosnia (1995) and Darfur (2003-present).

The Holocaust Memorial Day Scotland video, organised by Edinburgh Interfaith Association, will be previewed at a civic reception hosted by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh. It will then be officially shown at 6pm on Wednesday January 26 and will be available for further viewings in schools and for other organisations on January 27 and thereafter.

The programme will include contributions from Holocaust survivor Henry Wuga , Rwandan genocide survivor Eric Eugene Murangwa, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Housing and Local Government Shona Robison, and students from Scotland and Rwanda. New music has been composed for the occasion.

Iain Stewart, Executive Director of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association said: “We are honoured and privileged to lead this commemoration in Scotland.”
