New Street Pastors Commissioned in Edinburgh and Peterhead

Tuesday June 7 2022

Fourteen new Street Pastors were commissioned at two special services in Scotland recently.

In Edinburgh, 13 new Street Pastors were commissioned at Bruntsfield Evangelical Church; while one new Street Pastor was welcomed and several others recommissioned at the Methodist Church in Peterhead.

Chris Jewell, CEO of Ascension Trust Scotland, which oversees the work of the Street Pastors, presided at both of the Commissioning services, which had been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Street Pastors are trained volunteers who patrol in teams of men and women, usually on Friday and Saturday nights, supporting people who are out on the streets. Drawn from many different Christian denominations, they now operate in 25 different locations across Scotland.

Andy Amour, the Edinburgh Street Pastor Co-ordinator, said: “It was really good to be able to commission such a significant number of additional Street Pastors. This means we are now able to have Street Pastor patrols out every Friday and Saturday night listening caring and helping. We already are finding many people wanting to chat and share their experiences with us. There is little doubt that there has come a major increase in mental health issues as part of the pandemic, and we are able to chat and also to signpost people we meet for specialist help.”
