Work will start with a public meeting on Wednesday April 30 at 7pm in the City Chambers, to which all local churches will be invited. This will be the opportunity for people to volunteer to join the training programme for befrienders.
Development Manager Diane Beckett said: "I'm delighted to be working with Captains David and Susan Tidball and their colleagues from The Salvation Army in Dundee. We'll be presenting local churches with a way of offering practical help to homeless people in Dundee through befriending".
The Julius Project is Scottish Churches Housing Action's programme to develop new befriending initiativesfor homeless people, in parts of Scotland where no similar project already exists. Projects are already under way, in conjunction with local partners, in Renfrewshire, Perth & Kinross and Fife.
Successful befriending relationships increase the likelihood of sustaining a tenancy, can result in a return to education or training, and increase chances of getting – and keeping – a job. It also helps with handling health problems, including low level mental health issues, and misuse of alcohol or drugs.
The Julius Project is supported by the Church of Scotland Guild, and the Presbytery of Greenock and Paisley is a partner in the Renfrewshire project.
