Syria Campaign Raises Over £40,000

A Church of Scotland appeal to support refugees in Syria has raised over £40,000 in eight months.

The conflict in Syria, which will enter its fourth year this weekend, has so far claimed 130,000 lives and displaced over 8.4 million people – 2.4 million to neighbouring countries and the remainder within the country.

The Church launched the ‘A Place at the Table’ campaign last summer, to support the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon in its work to help refugees. It has a target of £50,000.

Donations made so far have come from congregations, Guilds, other organisations and individuals.

The Very Rev Dr Andrew McLellan, Convener of the Church of Scotland World Mission Council, said: “Last month, I was able to see with my own eyes the work being done by our partner church in Syria and Lebanon to support and care for refugees in desperate need. In Lebanon alone there are one million people who have been driven from their homes in Syria.

“The money sent from congregations in Scotland makes a wonderful difference, bringing light in one of the darkest places on Earth.”
