Zambia Visitors Discuss Youth Work

Wednesday June 19 2024

A delegation of youth workers from the Uniting Church of Zambia have visited Scotland this week to discuss ‘how do young people thrive?’

The group are part of an 18-year partnership between a church in Ndola, the Copperbelt region of Zambia, and the Youth Forum at St Paul’s Church, Provanmill in Glasgow. The latest exchange, funded by the Priority Areas Together for a Change, has explored youth leadership and how young people flourish. Last year, six youth workers travelled to Ndola and learned about various projects there.

The delegates from Ndola were selected to represent a variety of youth programmes including Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades, choir and drama groups and Sunday School. The group was led by Peggy Mwango, returning to Scotland 16 years after her first visit, and Steven Mulaisho, youth convener and responsible for work with around 2000 young people.

The group has visited schools and youth clubs, academic institutions and uniformed organisations. Yesterday (Tuesday) they visited the Church of Scotland offices in Edinburgh and had a meeting with the Moderator of the General Assembly, the Rt Rev Dr Shaw Paterson.
