Macduff Parish Church, Aberdeenshire, has donated nearly £1000 each to two local charities, the breast screening unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the Aberdeen Anchor Unit.
The money was raised from donations to a lunch club, set up by the church in November 2023 to help local people struggling with the cost of living. Although the fortnightly soup and hot pudding lunch was meant to be free, they soon found that many people wanted to give a donation.
To supplement this, a Soup and Sweet event was held on June 1. Altogether £1940.80 was raised.
The lunch club will resume this winter.
To commemorate their organist, Jim Marshall, who passed way suddenly in April 2022 after over 55 years in post, the congregation of Bowden and Melrose parish arranged to have the organ in Melrose Church overhauled. Thanks to the generosity of John Wilson. a member and keen organist, a new clarinet stop was installed as part of the work.
At the end of April a large and appreciative congregation including Jim’s widow Irene and other members of his family attended an organ recital by John Kitchen the Edinburgh City Organist to inaugurate the new stop.
