Miss Janet Stewart was the last interim Secretary of the Church of Scotland’s Committee on Hut and Canteen Work for HM Forces. The service was established during the Second World War and provided succour to troops fighting all over the world. At its height, the committee was behind over 500 huts or buildings across the world, offering food and a listening ear to service personnel.
The Committee continued to operate with UK armed forces until it was wound down by the General Assembly in the early 1970s.
Miss Stewart was awarded an MBE in 1970 and congratulated on the award by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. MBE awards are made for ‘achievement or service in and to the community which is outstanding in its field and has delivered sustained and real impact which stands out as an example to others’.
Her 20 years of service to the Committee on Hut and Canteen Work for HM Forces were commended by the General Assembly in 1972 as the Committee was formally wound down.
Many years later her honour insignia and letter were handed into the Church offices in George Street, Edinburgh (where she had once worked) for safekeeping.
Church staff are now hoping to reunite the honour with family or relatives of Miss Stewart.
