Edinburgh’s New Town Church has announced a sale of books, art and other goods, in aid of Christian Aid, on Saturday October 19 from 10am-4pm.
The George Street church, formerly St Andrew’s and St George’s West, was unable to hold its customary week-long Christian Aid Week sale this year, but has announced the one-day October sale as ‘the best way to raise funds for Christian Aid this year’.
In a letter to supporters, the organisers write: “For many years one of the chief joys of life at St Andrew’s and St George’s West was the outreach to the whole community, and indeed far beyond this city, that the Christian Aid endeavour enabled us to make. We had found a way to use our unique site for the benefit of the poorest people in the world and to do so with a community effort.
“We now pray that on 19 October we can perhaps recapture this spirit, if only for a few hours.”
Among the items on sale is a painting of Dean Village by Edinburgh artist Carola Gordon, who has a long association with the Sale. Books include original Beatrix Potter volumes, and first editions of classics including John Betjeman’s Summoned by Bells and Paul Gallico’s The Snow Goose. There has also been an ‘exceptional’ donation of a Scottish engineer’s life-time collection of books on boats, submarines, bridges, canals and roads.
Maps, games, jigsaws and music will also be included in the sale, and the church’s Undercroft café will be open throughout the day.
