Christians to Explore Minimum Income Guarantee

Wednesday October 2 2024

Christians from various denominations will come together in Glasgow next week to advocate for a Minimum Income Guarantee (MIG) for Scotland.

The measure, which would guarantee everyone in Scotland enough money to live a dignified life, is being explored by the Scottish Government and has been backed by the Church of Scotland and other anti-poverty campaigners.

As part of Challenge Poverty Week (October 7-13), the Poverty Alliance is hosting an event at the Renfield Centre in Glasgow to introduce the MIG concept, examine its impact and look at the theological perspective.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland will lead prayers together with his counterpart from the United Reformed Church in Scotland. Emma Jackson, Convenor of the Church’s Public Life and Social Justice Programme Group will be sharing her theological reflections together with Mary Cullen, the Editor of Open House Scotland. Ashley and Esther Vaughn from Fullerton Connexions will be leading a session on lived experiences of poverty. The Xaverians Missionaries, Christians Against Poverty and Justice and Peace Scotland will all be participating.

The free event runs from 10-3pm on October 12. Register at Eventbrite. Some travel bursaries will be available. Contact Alyson Laird at the Poverty Alliance for more details at Alyson.laird@povertyalliance.org
